Tidak seperti subgenre lain, sastra perjalanan hendak menegaskan narasi yang dibangunnya berasal dari persepsi objektif. Selain untuk meyakinkan pembaca, sastra perjalanan ingin menekankan jika acuannya adalah realitas, bukan fiksi atau fabrikasi semata. Tulisan ini bertendensi untuk menganalisis motif perjalanan dalam Bon Voyage Monsieur Le Président. Cerita tersebut merupakan salah satu cerita perjalanan Gabriel García Márquez yang terkumpul dalam Douze Contes Vagabonds. Dua belas cerita dalam kumpulan tersebut berkisah tentang pengalaman melancong seseorang dari Dunia Ketiga ke Dunia Pertama, Eropa. Dalam konteks yang lebih luas, akar dari catatan perjalanan berasal dari representasi Barat atas Timur sebagai travel report dalam aktivitas kolonialisme Eropa. Sehingga kisah-kisah perjalanan dalam Douze Contes Vagabonds harus dipahami sebagai counter-travel, karena subjek pencerita (pelancong/flâneur), yang menggunakan kelana sebagai modus operandi, berasal dari Dunia Ketiga.
